Qatar Airways launches service to Melbourne
Melbourne will welcome another international airline by the end of the year, with the announcement that Qatar Airways is planning to operate scheduled services to and from Melbourne Airport.
One of only six airlines to be awarded a Skytrax five-star rating, Qatar Airways flies to 87 destinations worldwide, including the UK airports of Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester. The daily non-stop services, to commence in the northern Winter 2009 schedule, will fly direct between Melbourne and the airline’s hub in Doha.
Melbourne is already enjoying an increased airline capacity in 2009 (Emirates added a third daily flight last month and Etihad Airways starts serving the city at the end of March), while Melbourne International Airport had a 4.5% year-to-year passenger growth in January – making it a record 27th month of growth in a row.
