The most popular places to live in Australia
The south-west of Western Australia and south-east Queensland are Australia’s most popular places to live, according to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The report also shows Brisbane was the only capital city in Australia which grew from “internal migration” - showing a net increase of 40,000 people from elsewhere in Australia.
It seems that Australians are beginning to migrate away from the major population centres like Perth, Sydney and Adelaide, into less inhabited coastal areas. Northern Queensland boasted three of the fastest growing areas – Cairns, Townsville and Mackay.
Another interesting feature of Australian life is that younger people – particularly those in the 20 to 35 year old age group – are not rushing to buy new homes. More than one-quarter (27per cent) of people aged 20–34 years in Melbourne or Sydney were living with their parents, according to the survey.
