Blue whale watching – by helicopter!
Get the ultimate view of the largest animal that ever lived on Earth on the world’s first dedicated blue whale watching heli tour on Australia’s world-famous Great Ocean Road. Blue whales tend to stay well offshore, so a helicopter ride provides the best opportunity to appreciate these magnificent creatures in their entirety.
A world first in ecotourism, the blue whale watching heli tours are operated as exclusive 30-minute experiences by specialist Heli Explore. The air tour follows these gentle giants’ course in the water, allowing passengers to enjoy the captivating sight of the whales’ skin as it changes colour from a dappled grey when exposed to the air to true blue underwater – then stay well clear as these rare and endangered creatures exhale water as high as nine metres into the air!
An adult blue whale can measure up to 100 feet from head to tail and can weigh as much as 150 tons. Although the species has been on the endangered list since the mid-1960s, recovery has been slow. Nowadays there are estimated to be only 10,000 blue whales, found only in five locations across the world (including western Victoria in Australia).Â
