Numbers of Indian students going to Australia plummet after attacks

Friday, January 8th, 2010

The number of Indian students wanting to study in Australia has slumped by almost 50%, according to figures from the Australian government.

The news comes after a year when attacks on Indian students in Melbourne and Sydney have prompted angry demonstrations in both India and Australia, and deteriorating relations between the Indian and Australian governments. Recently, the Indian government have issued a travel advisory to students going to Australia, after the murder in Melbourne of graduate student Nitin Garg.

Last year, more than 70,000 Indian students opted to study in Australia, according to Australia’s Tourism commission, but this year is likely to see a heavy fall, given the attacks in Australia and mood in India.

The number of Indians applying for student visas to Australia has plummeted by 46% according to the most recent figures from the immigration department, andand it is feared that the recent murder of Nitin Garg will raise even more concerns about student safety, and lead many more to look at universities and colleges in other countries.

New Zealand now increasingly popular for overseas students

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009
The number of international students coming to New Zealand is increasing, Education Minister Anne Tolley announced today.
“There was a steady decline in the number of international students in New Zealand from 2003 to 2008. These latest figures show we have reversed this trend,” said Mrs Tolley.
This year there were 76,562 fee-paying international students in New Zealand compared with 72,540 last year – an increase of more than 4000 students. Over 600 students a year now travel from the UK to study in New Zealand.
“Education is one of our top three service exports. Last year it contributed $2.1 billion to our economy, supported more than 32,000 jobs, and provided our education institutions with nearly $600 million in fees.
“The fact that more international students are choosing New Zealand as a study destination is great news.”
