Resource boom to drive jobs and migration to Western Australia

Several new multi-billion dollar projects are set to fuel the boom in Australia’s energy production.

Key states such as Western Australia are now a major source of iron ore, minerals and in particular energy like natural gas and oil. “We have what the world, and in particular the rapidly growing economies of Asia, want,” said Western Australia’s premier, Colin Barnett. Proof of that came last year, when three major oil companies – including American giant Chevron – announced that they would go ahead with the Gorgon project – a $41 billion plan to tap into gas resources in western Australia.

The plan, which will create thousands of jobs, is the first of at least half a dozen large gas projects that are set to confirm Australia as a major superpower in energy production.

Jobs are already filling up and Western Australia’s urban areas are already bursting at the seams because of the mining boom. A severe shortage of workers means that companies are competing for every conceivable positions – and prepared to pay top dollar for positions like truck driver which can attract a six figure salary in some areas.

To find out more about living and working in Western Australia, why not come and talk to the Government of Western Australia at Down Under Live! – which runs from the 27th to the 28th March at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds.
